Short Mat Bowls at Hellifield Village Institute
The new short mat bowls club got off to a flying start in November with a dozen members of the village joining on the first morning. Most of those arriving were new to the game so we had invited Jim and John, who play at Tosside, to come along to give us some advice and coaching. After a few tentative tries and some tips from the experts, we split into two teams for some light-hearted competition.
By week two we gained another member and John again came down to give advice. The format has now settled into a pattern for the two-hour session. We start with a warm up free practice, which allows new members to try out the game and those who have played refresh their skills. The remaining time is given over to a series of games with two friendly teams in competition. The teams are selected at random and change each week, both teams having members with different skill levels.
The session lasts from 10.00am until noon each Wednesday and includes a break for tea and coffee. Each session cost £2 with all proceeds going to the institute. The equipment was purchased with a grant from Awards for All at no cost to the village.
All equipment is provided, though anyone who has played before can bring his or her own bowls. So if you fancy a relaxed but fun morning in the company of old and new friends why not give the game a try? There is always someone on hand to welcome you and give a few tips to get you started and if you are already an experienced player come and give us the benefit of your expertise.
